Everyone thinks the favelas of Brazil are a dangerous place. Here’s why I can’t wait to get back.

Vidigal is one of the most photographed places on Earth, yet very few people even know it exists. Perched on the iconic Two Brothers Hill near Leblon, the neighbourhood is a 'favela', one of the many poor communities that dot the hills of Brazil's second city.

The favelas were brought to the world's attention in the 2002 film, City of God, which portrayed the favelas as dens of crime and drugs. In fact, over 40 actors in the film were recruited from Vidigal itself.

From January to May 2012, I taught English at a community centre in Vidigal. This personal narrative, published on Matador Network, tells the story of my experiences there.

You can find out more about life in the favelas at this page.
